Read the rules.


The sh sound is unvoiced (the vocal cords do not vibrate during its production), and is the counterpart to the voiced zh sound.

This sound is a continuous consonant, meaning that it should be capable of being produced for a few seconds with even and smooth pronunciation for the entire duration.

 The ch sound (not the sh sound), is the most common pronunciation for the ch spelling.

 The -tion suffix is only likely to be pronounced with a ch sound when it is preceded by an s sound (as in the words question and suggestion). In most other circumstances, the sh sound is the more likely pronunciation for this suffix.

The -sion suffix is only likely to be pronounced with a zh sound when it is preceded by an r sound or a vowel sound (as in the words version and vision). In most other circumstances, the sh sound is the more likely pronunciation for this suffix.

The sh sound before suffixes


The -ure suffix and -ious suffixes do not contain an sh sound within them. However, when these suffixes are preceded by the letters s, c, or t, those letters may be pronounced as an sh sound.

 In the s+ure spelling, the letter s is usually only pronounced as the sh sound when it is preceded by a consonant sound or is spelled with two adjacent letter s's. If the s+ure spelling is preceded by a vowel sound, the word is likely pronounced with a zh sound (as in the word closure).

Measuring Work

Measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something.

Work is the amount of energy necessary to move an object. A person can push against a brick wall until they sweat. But unless they moved the wall — even a tiny bit — they did no work. But at the same time, if you scoot the computer mouse even a part of an inch, you have done work. Work in the scientific sense. Don't try to convince your parents or your teachers that you have done a lot of work by playing video games.



Work can be measured. It is measured by the amount of distance that a force moves an object. Sir Isaac Newton was a very famous scientist who had a wonderful understanding of the relationship between force and motion. For this reason, the measurement is known as a Newton. It is abbreviated with a capital N. The term joule is often used to measure work as Newtons per meter. If it takes 1 Newton to move any object 1 meter, then that is equivalent to a joule

There are special tools for measuring the force necessary to move an object. These are known as force meters. They use a spring and a hook to determine how much pull is required to slide an object up an inclined plane. Really very simple to use.

A number that shows the size or amount of something.

 Usually the number is in reference to some standard measurement, such as a meter or kilogram.

 Here some scales are used to measure weight.

There are two main measurement standards: Metric and US.

Temperature is a degree of hotness or coldness the can be measured using a thermometer. It's also a measure of how fast the atoms and molecules of a substance are moving. Temperature is measured in degrees on the Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin scales.

In this lesson, we will review what you know about a sentence, identify some common features of a sentence.

Some sentences make statements. Some ask questions. Others give commands, and still others express strong feelings. Here are the four types of sentences by purpose. Make up your own sentences.

A declarative sentence makes a statement or expresses an opinion. Use a period at the end of a declarative sentence.

The commentator laughed at his own mistake.

An interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark.

An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling and ends with an exclamation mark.

There are many things that can be multiplied: numbers, vectors, matrices, functions, equations, sets, pegs...

As an abstract operation, multiplication is the same as addition. Both are binary (i.e., defined for two elements) operations satisfying the same set of axioms:

The basic idea of multiplication is repeated addition.

 For example: 5 × 3 = 5 + 5 + 5 = 15

 But as well as multiplying by whole numbers, you can also multiply by fractions or decimals.

Today you will learn to understand word divisions and how to use syllables in decoding and writing.

 “One vowel sound = one syllable.”

Repeat with lists for each of the following rules:

Divide between two vowels if they have different sounds, but not if they make only one sound together.

Divide between two consonants unless they form a digraph.

If a consonant is between two vowels, divide the word before the consonant if the first vowel has the long sound, and after the consonant if the first vowel is short and accented.

Remind students that words should only be divided between syllables when it is necessary to split them over two lines.


Haiku: Haiku is a great tool for practicing syllables. A poem from Japanese culture, haiku uses a strict syllable count to communicate intense imagery, usually about nature themes. The form has three lines, of five, seven and five syllables, respectively.

Begin by reading examples of poems.



The old pond-

a frog jumps in,

sound of water.


Blown from the west,

fallen leaves gather

in the east.


The crow has flown away;

swaying in the evening sun,

a leafless tree.



After students create their own haiku poems, provide them with a collection of objects from which to design illustrations to support the poems.

Write on a sheet of chart paper the terms latitude and longitude. Let students share what they know about the terms. Write down information that students share.

Explain that the lines of latitude and longitude (see sidebar for tricks to help students remember the difference) comprise an imaginary grid that has been placed over the globe.

The lines that run across the grid - the flat lines - are lines of latitude. The Equator is an example of a line of latitude. The Equator is the latitude line that divides Earth into two hemispheres, the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. The Equator is the 0 point of latitude. Latitude lines North of the Equator are referred to as North latitude; latitude lines South of the Equator are referred to as South latitude.

The lines that run up and down on the grid - the tall lines - are lines of longitude. The lines of longitude are also called meridians. The Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England, is the longitude line that divides Earth into two hemispheres, the eastern hemisphere and the western hemisphere. The Prime Meridian is the 0 point of longitude. Longitude lines East of the Prime Meridian are referred to as East longitude; longitude lines West of the Prime Meridian are referred to as West longitude.

Help students further understand the concepts by giving them some hands-on practice. First, determine the latitude and longitude coordinates for your students city and state.

If you are not sure of the coordinates, you can use this tool, the Latitude and Longitude Finder, to find your local coordinates. Just type in your City, State.

Write the latitude and longitude of your location on a board or chart. Help students use the Equator and Prime Meridian, and the lines of latitude and longitude, to find the location that matches the coordinates given. Students should land on their town!

Reading the text “We Learn About Latitude and Longitude”


Directions: in order to study the earth, we need to be able to locate specific points.

Cardinal Directions: North, East, West, South.

 Intermediate Directions: Lie between the cardinal directions and help to indicate direction more accurately. Northeast, Northwest, Southwest, Southeast.

The earth is an almost perfect sphere. 

Geographers have drawn imaginary lines around the spherical earth as a means of determining the location of specific points upon its surface.

Latitude: Imaginary lines that run east-west around the globe. It is the distance north to south of the equator.

The Equator is 0 degrees latitude.

Degrees are units of measure. There are 180 degrees of latitude.

Minutes are smaller units of the measure of degrees. There are 60 minutes in each degree. Seconds are smaller units of the measure of minutes. There are 60 seconds in each minute.

Lines of latitude are also called parallels. They never cross.

In this lesson, we will learn about space traveling, and about the first person on the moon, Neil Armstrong. Neil Armstrong, the first man to step foot on the Moon, has passed away at the age of 82. The legendary U.S. astronaut died from complications following heart surgery he had earlier this month. He made history on July 20, 1969 as commander of the Apollo 11 Moon-landing mission. As he stepped onto the Moon's surface, he famously spoke the words: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." He was 38 at the time of his historic walk and instantly became one of the most famous people on the planet. However, he spent the rest of his life trying to avoid the spotlight and downplay his achievement. He later said he never understood why people focused so much on what he did.

Armstrong was born in 1930 and grew up fascinated with flying after taking a plane at the age of 6. He began making model planes and collecting books and magazines on aviation. As a teenager, he got his pilot's license before his driving license. In 1949, he became a Navy pilot, and flew combat missions in the Korean War. In 1958, he joined the organisation that became NASA and became a test pilot. Years after his Moon landing, Armstrong was asked how he felt about knowing his footprints would stay on the Moon's surface for thousands of years. He said: "I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up." When asked about the Moon, he said: "It's an interesting place to be. I recommend it."

In this lesson, we will review what you know about a sentence, identify some common features of a sentence. 

What features of a sentence do you know?

 What are the main components of any English sentence?

 A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Are these sentences? 1. "Ashley walks to the park." 

2. "She takes a friend with her." 

3. "Climb a tree." Both (1) and (2) are sentences, but (3) is not a sentence. Why? It does not express a complete thought. We wonder: who climbs a tree? Why? -By adding some words to (3) we can make a complete sentence: "Ashley and her friend climb a tree." Every sentence has a subject and a predicate. 


The subject usually contains the main subject or noun, and the predicate tells what the subject is doing, which contains the verb of the sentence.

 Rules for writing sentences: 

1. Every sentence must begin with a capital letter. 

2. Every sentence must end with a punctuation mark. You use different marks for different kinds of sentences.

 A period (.) ends a sentence that tells something, or makes a statement.

 A questions mark (?) ends a sentence that asks a question.

Types of Sentences

There are three kinds of sentences that we say and write every day.

1. Declarative: a type of sentence that declares or makes a statement.

 Example - "Tom goes to school."

2. Interrogative: a sentence that asks a question.

3. Imperative: a sentence that makes a request or gives a command.

 Example - "Hurry Tom! Go to school now!"

Present this question to the class: The gum Sheila wanted to buy costs $.26. Should she give the cashier $.20 or $.30?


After some discussion, introduce 22 + 34 + 19 + 81 to the class. How difficult is this to do in your head? If we changed it to be 20 + 30 + 20 + 80, is that easier?

Draw a simple hill on the blackboard. Write the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 so that the one and 10 are at the bottom of the hill, on opposite sides, and the five ends up at the very top of the hill. This hill will be used to illustrate the two tens that the students are choosing between when they are rounding.

Tell students that today we will focus on two-digit numbers. They have two choices with a problem like Sheila’s. She could have given the cashier two dimes ($0.20) or three dimes ($0.30). What she is doing when she figures out the answer is called rounding - finding the closest “10” to the actual number.

With a number like 29, this is easy. We can easily see that 29 is very close to 30. But with numbers.

Pretend that they are on a bike. If they ride it up to the 4 (as in 24), and stop, where is the bike most likely to head? (Back down to where they started.) So when you have a number like 24, and you are asked to round it to the nearest 10, the nearest 10 is backwards, which gets you right back to 20.
