 Тема: Північний і Південний полюси

In this lesson, we will revise what we have learnt about the model of Earth, we will learn about the descoveries of the North and South Poles, and explorers Robert Peary and Roald Amundsen.

.

What does our Earth look like? What is situated on its top and at its bottom?

Make up sentences using any two of the words written on the board in each. Remember there should be at least 12 words in each sentence.

Read the text “People Discovered the North and South Poles”

The North Pole

We all know that Santa Claus lives at the North Pole. But just where is the North Pole? We know it's north. Is there a giant pole there? Let’s take a look at the place where Santa makes his home.

Where is the North Pole?

So where exactly is the North Pole? Well, the Earth rotates or spins around an axis. If you were to draw a line at the axis through the center of the Earth, that line would exit the Earth in two places. At the bottom of the Earth, it would exit at the South Pole and at the top would be the North Pole. The North Pole is the northernmost place on Earth.

North Pole Location

Is it ice or land?

There is no land at the North Pole, but it is covered in a thick layer of ice around 6 to 9 feet thick. So you can stand there and Santa can have his home there.

How cold is it there?

In the winter, temperatures average around minus 29 degrees F (-34 deg C). In the summer it is quite a bit warmer at plus 32 degrees F (0 deg C). This may sound pretty cold, but is actually quite a bit warmer than the average temperatures in the South Pole.

Who discovered the North Pole?

There is actually a lot of controversy around who was the first explorer to visit the North Pole. Robert Peary claimed to have reached the pole in 1909, however, he didn't have very good proof and many people have argued that he didn't make it. The first fully verified visit to the North Pole was by explorer Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile who flew over the pole in an airship named the Norge in 1926.

Axis of the Earth

The Earth rotates around an axis

What country is it in?

The North Pole is not in any country. It is considered part of international waters.

Fun Facts about the North Pole

When you are standing on the North Pole, any direction you point is South!

All the lines of longitude meet at the North Pole.

The nearest land is around 700 miles away.

During the summer the sun is always up. The sun rises in March and sets in September. That's a really long day and night!

The magnetic North Pole is different from the true North Pole.

Roald Amundsen (1872 - 1928) was an explorer of the North and South Poles. He led the first expedition to reach the South Pole and was the first person to visit both the North and South Pole.

Where did Roald grow up?

Roald was born in Borge, Norway on July 16, 1872. He grew up in Norway with his three brothers. His father, who was involved with shipping industry, died when Roald was just 14 years old. Roald had dreamt of becoming an explorer, but his mother wanted him to become a doctor. He followed his mother's wishes until she died when he was 21 years old. Then he left school to pursue his dream of exploring.

Roald became a crewmember on various ships traveling to the Arctic. In 1887 he was first mate on a ship named the Belgica. It became the first expedition to survive the winter on the Arctic. Roald learned valuable lessons of survival during these early trips that would help him later on. One was that fresh seal meat had vitamin C which would help in curing scurvy. Another was to use animal skins rather than wool coats to keep warm.

Northwest Passage

In 1903 Roald commanded his own expedition on his ship the Gjoa. He traveled to the magnetic North Pole and was the first to discover the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. This passage had been searched for over many centuries. Roald's ability to navigate and survive this trip was a great accomplishment.

South Pole

Roald next planned an expedition to reach the North Pole. However, when he heard that Robert Peary claimed to have already reached the North Pole, he made last minute plans and decided to pursue the South Pole. He kept this a secret until the last minute. He was in a race with British explorer Robert Scott to be the first to the South Pole.

On January 14, 1911 Amundsen's ship, the Fram, arrived at the Bay of Whales in Antarctica. They set up camp there and prepared for the trip to the South Pole. Roald made sure that the dogs were well fed. One of the crew, a carpenter named Olav Bjaaland, redesigned the sleds they would use. He lowered the weight from 195 pounds to 50 pounds. This lower weight would be crucial in saving energy during the trip.

They set out to reach the South Pole ten months after arriving on Antarctica on October 20th. There were five men, 52 dogs, and four sleds. At first they traveled quickly, but soon they had to pass over mountains and avoid dangerous crevasses. Finally, after nearly two months of hard traveling, they reached their destination. On December 14, 1911 Roald Amundsen planted the Norwegian Flag at the South Pole.

All five of Amundsen's crew returned safely to base camp, but only 11 dogs made it back alive. The expedition took 99 days and traveled over 1,800 miles.

Robert Scott's British expedition reached the South Pole 35 days after Amundsen. Unfortunately, they did not make it back alive, but were found frozen to death months later.

 Тема: Характеристика матерії

Основна частина уроку

1. Introduction of the new vocabulary

T: Match the words to their definitions

Immobile- living or lasting for ever

Cell- the smallest part of a living thing that can exist independently

Obtain- to get

Adapt- to accept

Condition- the situation in which people live or work

Toddler- a young person at the age between 11 and 16

Puberty- the age between 11 and 16

T: Read the text and find out 6 features of a living thing

Young children can have difficulty telling the difference between living and non-living things. For example, a child may think that because something moves or makes a sound, such as a toy, it is alive. A kid might see a sleeping animal or an immobile plant and not realize that it is alive. Scientists have six rules, all of which must be met, to determine whether something is living. All living things are made of cells, obtain and use energy, develop and grow, are capable of reproducing, interact with the world, and adapt to changing conditions.

 Тема: Характеристика матерії

Instructions

1. Determine whether the object is made of cells. For example, a bear's body has a cellular structure that includes blood cells and brain cells.

2. Observe the object to find out whether it obtains and uses energy. A bird, for example, searches for worms and eats them, and a person picks an apple off of a tree and bites into it.

3. Notice whether the thing develops and grows. A person starts as a baby, then grows into a toddler, and later goes through puberty and becomes an adult. A caterpillar develops into a butterfly, and a tadpole turns into a frog.

4. Find out if the thing is capable of reproducing. After mating, a cat becomes pregnant and then gives birth to kittens, for example.

5. See if the thing interacts with the world. For example, beavers build dams, people go into stores and purchase items, and dogs bury bones in the backyard.

6. Look at the thing and see whether it adapts to changing conditions, such as a bear hibernating when winter approaches, or a flower opening its petals when the sun comes out.

Post-reading task

T: Answer the questions

1. Is a living thing made of cells?

2. Does a non living thing get energy?

3. Does a living thing develop and grow?

4. Do non living things interact?

5. Do living things adapt to changing conditions?

1. Skills drilling

T: Look at the pictures. How are they the same? How are they different?

 Тема: Словник

Основна частина.
The present section focuses on a general dictionary.
A dictionary is structured at three levels below the level of the dictionary as a whole:
The dictionary as a whole has a framing structure which comprises a set of main sections that correspond to the chapters of a book.
A subset of these sections – mostly only one – comprises an entry list. The structure of each of these sections is a macrostructure (or the macrostructure of the dictionary).
Each of the entries in a macrostructure has an internal structure of its own, which is the microstructure of the entries of that list (thus, if the dictionary contains only one word list, the microstructure of the dictionary).
The structure of a dictionary is visualized as follows:

1.1. Table of contents

The table of contents of a dictionary contains the main sections as enumerated in the schema above and discussed here below.
1.2. Preface

The preface of a dictionary provides at least the following kinds of information:
the purpose of the dictionary,
the intended user-group,
the data that the dictionary is based on and the limitations following from it,
modifications of earlier editions.

The metalexicographic notes (a - c) may as well be taken out of the preface and put into a separate section, the introduction.
1.3. Instructions

The user's guide deals with the following topics:
the macrostructure,
the principles of lemmatization and the selection of lemmas,
the microstructure and each of its components.

The manner in which this information is presented is naturally tuned to the user group envisaged. Hints for colleagues of the same specialty may be terse; explanations for laymen will make less presuppositions.
1.4. Grammatical information

As explained elsewhere, a grammar and a dictionary together account for the significative system of a language. Naturally, often only one is produced without the other. Just as many grammars contain a glossary of the vocabulary of the language as an appendix, many dictionaries that lack a grammar companion contain a grammar sketch as a section.

The section on grammatical information may be an entire grammar in a nutshell, which is sometimes called a dictionary grammar. For well-described languages, it more customarily is restricted to a set of inflection paradigms. It is then organized by inflection classes. For each inflection class, an example word is inflected through the paradigm, commonly in the form of a table. The inflection classes are labeled by abbreviations which are referenced in the grammatical section of dictionary entries.
1.5. Appendices
1.5.1. Transliteration table

In a plurilingual dictionary, a language may use a non-Latin script. For a syllabic or alphabetic script, a transliteration table may be provided.
1.5.2. Conversion table

For an encyclopedia and a bilingual dictionary, conversion tables for units of measure may be provided.
1.5.3. Abbreviations

The entry list of a dictionary with its macrostructure and microstructure fulfills all the usual requirements for the use of abbreviations: standardized categorizations that repeat themselves in thousands of entries need not and should not be spelt out in full, but be abbreviated. The full list of abbreviations used is contained in the present section. Its layout conveniently takes the form of a table. This has at least two columns:abbreviation         full form
adj.    adjective
...       ...
Where the terminology is specialized and variegated, a third column may be necessary that hints at the meaning of the term, e.g.:abbreviation   full form         explication
abs.   absolute          free non-incorporated form of noun
act.    active  case or cross-reference position in active system
...       ...         ...

The abbreviation table may again be printed in two columns per page, as is commonly done with the entry-list itself.
1.5.4. Symbols

Instead of abbreviations, the dictionary may make use of symbols. These are explained like abbreviations:symbol          meaning
~       [copy of lemma]
      see
♀       female
...       ...

1.5.5. Bibliography

Just like any piece of intellectual work, a dictionary profits from use of specialized literature, whose bibliographical references are enumerated here.

If the data that the dictionary is based on are a corpus of published texts, then the bibliography should be divided into two subsections: 1) primary sources [i.e. the corpus], 2) specialized literature.
