The separation of church and state
The separation of church and state is a description for the distance in the relationship between organized religion and the nation state. It may refer to creating a secular state, with or without explicit reference to such separation, or to changing an existing relationship of church involvement in a state (disestablishment). Some sources use the phrase "separation of mosque and state" to refer to separation between Islam and politics.

Although the concept of separation has been adopted in a number of countries, there are varying degrees of separation depending on the applicable legal structures and prevalent views toward the proper relationship between religion and politics. While a country's policy may be to have a definite distinction in church and state, there may be an "arm's length distance" relationship in which the two entities interact as independent organizations. A similar but typically stricter principle of laïcité has been applied in France and Turkey, while some socially secularized countries such as Denmark and the United Kingdom have maintained constitutional recognition of an official state religion. The concept parallels various other international social and political ideas, including secularism, disestablishmentarianism, religious liberty, and religious pluralism. Whitman (2009) observes that in many European countries, the state has, over the centuries, taken over the social roles of the church, leading to a generally secularized public sphere.

The degree of separation varies from total separation mandated by a constitution, as in India and Singapore; to an official religion with total prohibition of the practice of any other religion, as in the Maldives.

Most Christians agree that their faith affects how they approach politics, but disagreements arise over the political role of the church. A common source of confusion is the phrase "separation of church and state." Although the U.S. Constitution does not include these specific words, the phrase is part of the American lexicon and one that evokes strong reactions. Some associate the phrase with strident secularists who want to remove all vestiges of religion from the public square, forgetting entire traditions of Christian belief, such as Anabaptists, that uphold separation out of their religious convictions. Others assume that theological traditions affirming the integration of faith into all realms of life, including government, aim for nothing less than creating a theocracy.

Why do birds need wings? What do you know about Wright brothers? What did they invent? The Wrights had made kites, very large ones, in fact. By 1900, they were making ones so large that people could fly in them, sort of. These were called gliders, and Orville and Wilbur actually built one or two that were large enough for a person to ride in. They flew on nothing but air current, and the person could get a ride of about 10 seconds before the glider came down to the ground. On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Three more flights were made that day with Wilbur flies a glider in earlier tests Orville's brother Wilbur piloting the record flight lasting 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. The brothers began their experimentation in flight in 1896 at their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. They selected the beach at Kitty Hawk as their proving ground because of the constant wind that added lift to their craft. In 1902 they came to the beach with their glider and made more than 700 successful flights. Having perfected glided flight, the next step was to move to powered flight. No automobile manufacturer could supply an engine both light enough and powerful enough for their needs. So they designed and built their own. All of their hard work, experimentation and innovation came together that December day as they took to the sky and forever changed the course of history. The brothers notified several newspapers prior to their historic flight, but only one - the local journal - made mention of the event. T: Which Wright brother was the oldest child in the family? S: Seven children were born to Milton and Susan Wright. Wilbur and Orville were third and fourth in birth order. Milton was a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren, and the family moved with the job from time to time. T: Which incident in the Wright Brothers' childhood sparked their interest in flying? S: Their father gave them a toy helicopter.. Bishop Wright brought the boys a souvenir toy helicopter on one of his trips. It wasn't very sturdy. Made of bamboo, paper, cork, and a rubber band, sources say the boys played with it until it broke, and then they made their own! T: Both Wilbur and Orville Wright attended which college? S: None of these. Wilbur had plans to attend Yale. However, an injury and his mother's illness kept him at home. Orville dropped out of high school to help his brother start a new business. T: What was the first business owned and run by the Wright Brothers? S: Printing Shop. The brothers opened a printing business in 1889 after building their own press. One source states that it was made out of a damaged tombstone and old buggy parts. Their first paper was called "The West Side News." Orville was the publisher, and Wilbur was the editor. Eventually the brothers moved on to commercial printing. T: The Wright Brothers designed and built their own bicycle line. Which of the following bicycles did they manufacture? S: Van Cleve. In 1892 they opened their own repair and sales shop, called the "Wright Cycle Exchange," and by 1896 they began manufacturing their own brand. The "Van Cleve" model sold for $64, and the "St. Claire" sold for $42.50. It is estimated that Wilbur and Orville manufactured about 300 bicycles during this time, and earned between $2,000 and $3,000 a year. Today only five of their bicycles are known to exist. T: In what city was the famous Wright Brothers' bicycle shop, later known as the Wright Cycle Company, based? S: Dayton, Ohio. As the boys were growing up, the family moved from time to time due to their father's work. Wilbur was born in Indiana; Orville was born in Ohio. The family moved to Iowa when Milton became a bishop, but subsequently moved back to Dayton. This is where their aviation experiments began, but, of course, Kitty Hawk is the place of their first flight. The work done at the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop led them to an aviation breakthrough. T: Orville and Wilbur Wright's family supported their work in aviation, however, their father had a rule he expected them to follow. What was it? S: They could not test fly together.. Because of the high mortality rate among early aviators, the brothers promised their father they would not fly together, but in 1910 they asked their father's permission to do so, and he allowed it. Then Orville took Milton, 82 years old, on a seven-minute flight. Reportedly, the plane rose to about 350 feet, and Milton called, "Higher, Orville, higher!" T: The Wright Company transported the first known commercial air cargo on November 7, 1910. What was the cargo? S: Dress Silk. The plane flew from Dayton to Columbus, Ohio, in one hour and six minutes. Morehouse-Martens Department Store paid $5,000 for the service. They cut the silk in small pieces and sold them as souvenirs. Neither Orville nor Wilbur Wright ever married.

What features of a sentence do you know? What are the main components of any English sentence? A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Are these sentences? 1. "Ashley walks to the park." 2. "She takes a friend with her." 3. "Climb a tree." Both (1) and (2) are sentences, but (3) is not a sentence. Why? It does not express a complete thought. We wonder: who climbs a tree? Why? -By adding some words to (3) we can make a complete sentence: "Ashley and her friend climb a tree." Every sentence has a subject and a predicate. The subject usually contains the main subject or noun, and the predicate tells what the subject is doing, which contains the verb of the sentence. Rules for writing sentences: 1. Every sentence must begin with a capital letter. 2. Every sentence must end with a punctuation mark. You use different marks for different kinds of sentences. Punctuation Marks: A period (.) ends a sentence that tells something, or makes a statement. A questions mark (?) ends a sentence that asks a question. An exclamation point (!) ends a sentence that shows excitement. Types of Sentences There are three kinds of sentences that we say and write every day. 1. Declarative: a type of sentence that declares or makes a statement. Example - "Tom goes to school." 2. Interrogative: a sentence that asks a question. Example - "Did Tom go to school?" 3. Imperative: a sentence that makes a request or gives a command. Example - "Hurry Tom! Go to school now!" Example sentences: (Teachers: complete the following sentences with the students. Identify the type and show them how to underline the subject with one line, and the predicate with two lines.) "Did Juan finish his chores?" (Interrogative sentence) (Subject: Did Juan/ Predicate: finish his chores) "Sam and Adam played football." Discuss why rounding and estimation is so important. What do you think these words have to do with math? Rounding Estimate Nearest ten Practice. Present this question to the class: The gum Sheila wanted to buy costs $.26. Should she give the cashier $.20 or $.30? After some discussion, introduce 22 + 34 + 19 + 81 to the class. How difficult is this to do in your head? If we changed it to be 20 + 30 + 20 + 80, is that easier? Draw a simple hill on the blackboard. Write the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 so that the one and 10 are at the bottom of the hill, on opposite sides, and the five ends up at the very top of the hill. This hill will be used to illustrate the two tens that the students are choosing between when they are rounding. Tell students that today we will focus on two-digit numbers. They have two choices with a problem like Sheila’s. She could have given the cashier two dimes ($0.20) or three dimes ($0.30). What she is doing when she figures out the answer is called rounding - finding the closest “10” to the actual number. With a number like 29, this is easy. We can easily see that 29 is very close to 30. But with numbers. Pretend that they are on a bike. If they ride it up to the 4 (as in 24), and stop, where is the bike most likely to head? (Back down to where they started.) So when you have a number like 24, and you are asked to round it to the nearest 10, the nearest 10 is backwards, which gets you right back to 20. Continue to do the hill problems with the following numbers. Model for the first three with student input, then continue with guided practice, or have students do the last three in pairs: 12 28 31 49 86 73 What should we do with a number like 35? Discuss this as a class, and refer back to Sheila’s problem at the beginning. The “rule” is that we round to the next highest 10, even though the five is exactly in the middle. Have students do six problems like the ones in class. Offer an extension for students who are already doing well, to round the following numbers to the nearest 10: 151 189 234 185 347 Make up and write down your own problems on rounding and read them out for the rest of the class to solve.
